  6. Before 1980, plastic recycling and incineration were negligible. Since then, only nonfiber plastics have been subject to significant recycling efforts. The following results apply to nonfiber plastic only: Global recycling and incineration rates have slowly increased to account for 18 and 24%, respectively, of nonfiber plastic waste generated in 2014 (figs. S5 and S6). On the basis of limited available data, the highest recycling rates in 2014 were in Europe (30%) and China (25%), whereas in the United States, plastic recycling has remained steady at 9% since 2012 (12, 13, 34–36). In Europe and China, incineration rates have increased over time to reach 40 and 30%, respectively, in 2014 (13, 35). However, in the United States, nonfiber plastics incineration peaked at 21% in 1995 before decreasing to 16% in 2014 as recycling rates increased, with discard rates remaining constant at 75% during that time period (34). Waste management information for 52 other countries suggests that in 2014, the rest of the world had recycling and incineration rates similar to those of the United States (37). To date, end-of-life textiles (fiber products) do not experience significant recycling rates and are thus incinerated or discarded together with other solid waste.

Mean values and SDs were gathered from published literature (table S4) (22, 25–29). Product lifetimes may vary significantly across economies and also across demographic groups, which is why distributions were used and sensitivity analysis was conducted with regard to mean product lifetimes. The total amount of primary plastic waste generated in year t was calculated as PW (t) = (figs. S3 and S4). Secondary plastic waste generated in year t was calculated as the fraction of total plastic waste that was recycled k years ago, SW (t) = [PW (t − k) + SW (t − k)][RR (t − k)], where k is the average use time of secondary plastics and RR (t − k) is the global recycling rate in year t − k. Amounts of plastic waste discarded and incinerated are calculated as DW(t) = [PW(t) + SW(t) ∙ DR(t) and IW(t) = [PW(t) + SW(t)] ∙ IR(t), with DR(t) and IR(t) being the global discard and incineration rates in year t (fig. S5). Cumulative values at time T were calculated as the sum over all T − 1950 years of plastics mass production. Examples are cumulative primary production and cumulative primary plastic waste generation, (Fig. 3). By identifying and synthesizing dispersed data on production, use, and end-of-life management of polymer resins, synthetic fibers, and additives, we present the first global analysis of all mass-produced plastics ever manufactured. We estimate that 8300 million metric tons (Mt) as of virgin plastics have been produced to date. As of 2015, approximately 6300 Mt of plastic waste had been generated, around 9% of which had been recycled, 12% was incinerated, and 79% was accumulated in landfills or the natural environment. If current production and waste management trends continue, roughly 12,000 Mt of plastic waste will be in landfills or in the natural environment by 2050.

Plastic Planet is that rare call-to-action documentary that might rouse viewers to do something more than nod their heads in agreement. A methodically researched yet engaging examination of the environmental and health problems associated with plastic, this wide-ranging warning cry uses an intelligent investigative style along with animation. The growth of plastics production in the past 65 years has substantially outpaced any other manufactured material. The same properties that make plastics so versatile in innumerable applications—durability and resistance to degradation—make these materials difficult or impossible for nature to assimilate. Thus, without a well-designed and tailor-made management strategy for end-of-life plastics, humans are conducting a singular uncontrolled experiment on a global scale, in which billions of metric tons of material will accumulate across all major terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems on the planet. The relative advantages and disadvantages of dematerialization, substitution, reuse, material recycling, waste-to-energy, and conversion technologies must be carefully considered to design the best solutions to the environmental challenges posed by the enormous and sustained global growth in plastics production and use.Suspended garbage prevents sunlight from reaching plankton and algae. While many different types of trash enter the ocean, plastics make up the majority of marine debris for two reasons. First, plastic’s durability, low cost, and malleability mean that it’s being used in more and more consumer and industrial products. Second, plastic goods do not biodegrade but instead, break down into smaller pieces.  PLASTIC PLANET - DER FILM. We compiled production statistics for resins, fibers, and additives from a variety of industry sources and synthesized them according to type and consuming sector (table S2 and figs. S1 and S2) (12–24). Data on fiber and additives production are not readily available and have typically been omitted until now. On average, we find that nonfiber plastics contain 93% polymer resin and 7% additives by mass. When including additives in the calculation, the amount of nonfiber plastics (henceforth defined as resins plus additives) manufactured since 1950 increases to 7300 Mt. PP&A fibers add another 1000 Mt. Plasticizers, fillers, and flame retardants account for about three quarters of all additives (table S3). The largest groups in total nonfiber plastics production are PE (36%), PP (21%), and PVC (12%), followed by PET, PUR, and PS (<10% each). Polyester, most of which is PET, accounts for 70% of all PP&A fiber production. Together, these seven groups account for 92% of all plastics ever made. Approximately 42% of all nonfiber plastics have been used for packaging, which is predominantly composed of PE, PP, and PET. The building and construction sector, which has used 69% of all PVC, is the next largest consuming sector, using 19% of all nonfiber plastics (table S2). The first image shows a turtle munching on a piece of plastic and the second image shows the corpse of a bird (black-footed albatross) with plastic content in its belly. What are the common facts you notice here? The vast majority of monomers used to make plastics, such as ethylene and propylene, are derived from fossil hydrocarbons. None of the commonly used plastics are biodegradable. As a result, they accumulate, rather than decompose, in landfills or the natural environment (6). The only way to permanently eliminate plastic waste is by destructive thermal treatment, such as combustion or pyrolysis. Thus, near-permanent contamination of the natural environment with plastic waste is a growing concern. Plastic debris has been found in all major ocean basins (6), with an estimated 4 to 12 million metric tons (Mt) of plastic waste generated on land entering the marine environment in 2010 alone (3). Contamination of freshwater systems and terrestrial habitats is also increasingly reported (7–9), as is environmental contamination with synthetic fibers (9, 10). Plastic waste is now so ubiquitous in the environment that it has been suggested as a geological indicator of the proposed Anthropocene era (11).30. The plastic debris suspended close to the surface actually end up blocking sunlight from reaching below. When this happens, algae and planktons do not get sunlight. These marine organisms are autotrophs. Simply put, they use carbon, oxygen and sunlight to make their own food.

Und trotz Bootes Eifer und Engagement werden die Fakten zäh und etwas langweilig präsentiert. da er nunmal ein Licht in ein nahezu unbeleuchtetes Thema bringt. Plastic Planet ist auch auf Twitter. We are pretty darn sure that majority of you will agree with what we are stating. Those of you who do not agree, take a look at the two images below. Now that whatever damage we have caused cannot be undone, the best we can do is to prevent the growth of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. But, is that possible considering that the billionaire psychopaths (simply put capitalists) have absolutely no respected for nature and all they care about is profit? We don’t think so! The only way to stop them is to stop using the plastic products they throw our way. What do you think? Drop your comments below and let us know. In 2011, the UK FSC consumed about 18% of total primary energy use, generating 115 MtCO 2 e (around 21% of UK emissions, excluding emissions from non-fertiliser pre-farm production, packaging, food waste and land use change). Additionally net trade contributed 61 MtCO 2 e (Defra, 2014a, Sneddon et al., 2015).. Agricultural production contributes between 47% and 61% of greenhouse gas (GHG.

In January 2019, ECHA proposed a wide-ranging restriction on intentional uses of microplastics in products placed on the EU/EEA market to avoid or reduce their release to the environment. The proposal is estimated to cut down emissions by at least 85 % and prevent the release of 400 000 tonnes of microplastics over the 20-year period following. Because the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is so far from any country’s coastline, no nation will take responsibility or provide the funding to clean it up. Charles Moore, the man who discovered the vortex, says cleaning up the garbage patch would “bankrupt any country” that tried it.

Global additives production data, which are not publicly available, were acquired from market research companies and cross-checked for consistency (table S3) (17, 18). Additives data are available for 2000 to 2014. Polymer type and industrial use sector breakdowns of polymer production and the additives to polymer fraction were both stable over the time period for which data are available and thus assumed constant throughout the modeling period of 1950–2015. Any errors in the early decades were mitigated by the lower production rates in those years. Additives data were organized by additive type and industrial use sector and integrated with the polymer data. Pi (t) denotes the amount of primary plastics (that is, polymers plus additives) produced in year t and used in sector i (fig. S1). These areas of spinning debris are linked together by the North Pacific Subtropical Convergence Zone, located a few hundred kilometers north of Hawaii. This convergence zone is where warm water from the South Pacific meets up with cooler water from the Arctic. The zone acts like a highway that moves debris from one patch to another.  The plastic debris suspended close to the surface actually end up blocking sunlight from reaching below. When this happens, algae and planktons do not get sunlight. These marine organisms are autotrophs. Simply put, they use carbon, oxygen and sunlight to make their own food. Great Pacific Garbage Patch Is Bigger and Mostly Made of

Plastic Planet ist zu einem Film geworden, der mich verfolgt und begleitet, auf meiner Suche danach, wie es mit unserem Plastik Planeten ausschaut. über die Angst vor den Mächtige Actually, there is a garbage patch. It is just that the plastics are not seen floating on top of water surface of the Pacific Ocean. These plastics are in fact microplastics or rather small pieces of plastic that are suspended in the water.

A plastic water bottle discarded off the coast of California, for instance, takes the California Current south toward Mexico. There, it may catch the North Equatorial Current, which crosses the vast Pacific. Near the coast of Japan, the bottle may travel north on the powerful Kuroshiro Current. Finally, the bottle travels westward on the North Pacific Current. The gently rolling vortexes of the Eastern and Western Garbage Patches gradually draw in the bottle. Animals that feed on algae and plankton, such as fish and turtles, will have less food. If populations of those animals decrease, there will be less food for apex predators such as tuna, sharks, and whales. Eventually, seafood becomes less available and more expensive for people. All the floating plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch inspired National Geographic Emerging Explorer David de Rothschild and his team at Adventure Ecology to create a large catamaran made of plastic bottles: the Plastiki. The sturdiness of the Plastiki displayed the strength and durability of plastics, the creative ways that they can be repurposed, and the threat they pose to the environment when they don’t decompose. In 2010, the crew successfully navigated the Plastiki from San Francisco, California, to Sydney, Australia. 32. When the fish and turtles decline in population, the apex predators such as sharks and tuna will have less food and their population will gradually decline. For many people, the idea of a “garbage patch” conjures up images of an island of trash floating on the ocean. In reality, these patches are almost entirely made up of tiny bits of plastic, called microplastics. Microplastics can’t always be seen by the naked eye. Even satellite imagery doesn’t show a giant patch of garbage. The microplastics of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch can simply make the water look like a cloudy soup. This soup is intermixed with larger items, such as fishing gear and shoes. table S4. Baseline mean values and SDs used to generate log-normal product lifetime distributions for the eight industrial use sectors used in this study (22, 25–29).22. If the danger to wildlife is not scary enough, let us take a look at how the garbage patch affect humans. What really happens is that sunlight keeps on breaking plastic garbage to smaller and smaller pieces where they eventually become microscopic pieces.

(polychlorinated biphenal) chemical substance that can occur naturally or be manufactured that may cause cancer.Marine debris can also disturb marine food webs in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. As microplastics and other trash collect on or near the surface of the ocean, they block sunlight from reaching plankton and algae below. Algae and plankton are the most common autotrophs, or producers, in the marine food web. Autotrophs are organisms that can produce their own nutrients from carbon and sunlight.

31. When sunlight fails to reach these organisms, their communities dies. Algae and planktons actually form the food source for smaller marine creatures like fish and turtles. Absence of these organisms will affect those marine creatures.2. Interesting, it is not the only garbage patch that haunts our oceans. There are other such patches which can be found in both Indian Ocean and Atlantic Ocean. Such garbage patches are actually developing in comparatively smaller water bodies such as the North Sea. Such smaller water bodies are actually shipping routes.
