After his and Norma's mother, Francine Calhoun, died, Caleb returned to White Pine Bay and offered his own inheritance money to Dylan, who turned down the offer. Dylan later found Caleb with a broken-down car at the side of the road and helped him. Caleb then told Dylan that Francine was "crazy, literally crazy". Dylan later found Caleb at his house with Gunner. Dylan told Caleb to leave, but Caleb successfully begged Dylan to let him stay there. (A Death in the Family) . I don’t think he knew exactly what he was doing when he picked up the knife. He gets a lot of information dumped on him by Dylan in that scene that’s really startling and traumatic, and he doesn’t know how to deal with it. I think as he walks across the room [towards Dylan] he’s figuring out what he’s doing. I think he just as easily, at that last minute, could’ve cut his own throat. It was one of those very emotionally messy scenes and that’s ultimately was what came out of it. This is evident in Bates Motel when Norman turns himself in to the police after realizing that he has killed many people. The protective personality of his mother Norma Bates takes over and stays there consistently until it helps him escape prison In Bates Motel, what is Norma's biggest mistake in raising Norman that causes him to have his problem, while Dylan does not? I feel like the show is portraying her as too normal, sane and a good mother so that the link between her behavior and Norman's murderous insanity becomes implausible

In Norman’s case, there were no ‘repetitive’ occurrences of traumas and no sexual abuse as a child or incest took place. There was only one trauma that took place in which he sees his mother about to be raped by his father and he kills him before he can make that attempt. That is the first occurrence where the personality takes over and kills the father. All this time, Norman believes that his mother (Norma) killed him; however, it was his alter personality who took that initiative. Norman is seen to be 7 years old when he attacks his father hence, the age group is the same as this theory. The disassociation was an escape from reality as Norman had no recollection of his actions and whenever he woke up, everything seemed okay. His alter personality of his mother protected him from all of the secrets like killing his own mother and father and when he got to know that it was his doing, the personality disappeared. He also stated that he faced depersonalization sometimes. Analgesia was also shown as whenever someone tried to attack Norman of which he is completely unaware, his personality took over and attacked the attacker. In addition, he suffers blackouts only when he is in sexual contact with a person, where his alter personality takes over and kills the women saying that these were ‘bad people’ showing that his concept of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ in the super ego were ambiguous to him."Mother" kept Caleb chained up in the basement for two days and taunted him. Caleb had a dream of him and Norma together as kids and he went into the freezer where he had a vision of his sister alive, only to discover that he was hugging her corpse. After Chick talked to Caleb, leading to the latter revealing more about his and Norma's childhoods, and told Norman that he had had more blackouts, "Mother" awoke Norman to tell him that Caleb had to die. Norman went down to the basement but instead of shooting Caleb he told him to run and never come back. However, "Mother" got angry and chased Caleb to the road, where he tried to flag down Chick's car. This fails when Chick becomes distracted by a text Norman sent him, and he accidently hits Caleb with his car, killing him. These are usually sexual abuses of incestuous nature. At middle childhood, the repetitive traumas are likely to develop a defense mechanism, which is another protective personality that takes over when the individual has to face a stressful situation. The splitting of personality occurs early on (2.5 to 8 years of age). Furthermore, the dissociative states appear because they facilitate (a) escape from the reality, (b) secrecy of traumatic memories, (c) depersonalization and (d) analgesia. Also, it occurs when an individual’s super ego is not exactly specifying what is good and bad. For example, a parent might love the child but also physically abuse him in anger.

TVLINE | Did you always know the series was going to end with Norman’s death? CARLTON CUSE | Yes, literally at the very beginning. This is the strangest television series I’ve been involved with in that so much of what we talked about early on actually held up. In a lot of cases, you’re figuring it out as you’re going along — I don’t need to mention any names. Or the show organically evolves in sort of directions that you don’t expect, based on a casting change or other writers come in with other ideas. At midnight, Dylan went to see Caleb and told him that he had come clean to Norma about him staying there and said he would have to leave. As Norma checked into a motel and lay on the bed, she had a recollection of hiding under the porch of the house as a child while her parents fought and Caleb comforted her. He was in it for his mom. And then he was just trying to survive and recreate his mom. But once all the curtains came down and there was nowhere to go to find her anymore, of course this is what he would want. He did not want to be a person who did bad things. He did not want to be crazy. He did not want to be sedated in a mental institution. There was no option for him that made any sense.
My guess is that Norman either blames Alex for it. Or Norman goes back to Pineview only to break out and kill Norma later. At this point, your guess is as good as mine. One thing’s for sure, the Season 4 finale can’t get here soon enough!Caleb appeared at the motel and Dylan let him in, but Norma arrived and kicked him out. Norma didn't tell Dylan why she reacted so badly to seeing Caleb. Caleb later saw Dylan in town and says that maybe he and Dylan should go fishing together; Dylan was busy, but offered to go to dinner with his uncle that night, and Caleb accepted. While eating, Caleb talked about how his friends are going to sell him their hotel and mentioned that he wanted Norma to help him run it. He also claimed that he and Norma's father was abusive and that Caleb never stood up to him, which is why Norma dislikes him. Dylan later told Norma that Caleb is a nice person, prompting an argument between the two and a physical fight with Norman, which ended when Norma revealed that Caleb is Dylan's biological father. As a child, her father would beat Norma and Caleb which left them scars. Frances was sedated most of the time and often locked Caleb and Norman in a room for a couple of days when depressed. Norma and Caleb often has consensual sex with each other, but when Norma wanted to stop, Caleb resorted to raping her from time to time, resulting in her being pregnant with her first child, Dylan. She never told Ray out of fear that he would kill Caleb. The raping continued till Caleb moved out of the house. Although a well-intentioned woman who did love her two sons, and not nearly as ruthless as her original counterpart, she was still a manipulative mother who missed at and refused opportunities to get Norman the help that he needed out of her overprotective nature-thus making her inadvertently responsible for her son's killings, especially since she knew what he was capable of.
She later married John Massett who become her first husband. Dylan never found out about his biological father and always thought John was his. Years later Norma had an affair with and abusive alcoholic, Sam Bates, which caused the marriage to dissolve, so she left John with Dylan. She later had Norman with Sam.
